HRA Holds Program for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

by Yonatan Pedram, SSLI '27

This past Friday, the Human Rights Activists (HRA) Club hosted a program meant to educate students about social justice. The program was in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as his memorial day was the Monday after the program.

There were four topics presented by the club: women’s rights, labor rights, racism, and LGBTQ rights. Since there were two groups representing each topic, there were a total of eight presentations.

The club’s program was a big success. Junior and HRA Club co-president Elinor Schlissel shared her thoughts on the program: “I think the program was a success, and I think our goal to educate everyone a little more about what is going on in our country today was accomplished.”

Freshman Sara Rosenthal also shared her opinion on the program: “I thought that the program was very well done. The two rooms I was in both taught about the subject, provided background, and tied it to MLK.” Rosenthal added how she thought the program could improve in the years to come. “If HRA does a similar program next year, I would love to be able to go to more than two rooms so I could learn about different issues as well,” she said.

The club knew the importance of the program, as it is necessary to educate the younger generation to stand against hate. Junior and HRA co-president Samson Mildron talked about the essential lesson taught in the program. He said, “This program was necessary in order to educate our communities about issues in human rights so that they will be inspired to make some change in our world, so we can follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther King, Jr.”

We would like to say Kol Hakavod to the HRA Club for their program and thank them for educating the Schechter community in the footsteps of Martin Luther King, Jr.
