This week, the high school's Student Government organized a series of fundraisers in order to raise awareness for acts of kindness and generosity. Several high school clubs focused on different acts they can take to promote kindness. The clubs involved were Human Rights Advocates (HRA), CAVOD, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and Kesher Club.
Each club held a different fundraiser every day. (SSLI Instagram)
Hannah Fineman, a junior, and president of HRA, explained that the goal of the week was to bring “little activities of joy to the Schechter student body.” Each club participates in order “to spread positivity and kindness throughout the school,” Fineman added.
Fineman’s club sold bagels and coffee cake on Monday to “raise money against human trafficking. It was an issue that people in the club really cared about, and we thought Kindness Week was a perfect opportunity to fundraise for this cause.”
Junior Ellie Strachan, a member of HRA, feels that recognizing kindness is important because “we all need to band together and show each other some love during all the stress.”On Wednesday, CAVOD club sold Hershey Kisses and kindness grams⸺sweet notes that students wrote and sent to their friends. The money is going to support the club's future endeavors of Pride Month celebrations.
SADD sold coffee and baked goods on Wednesday as well. Yael Pedram, co-president of SADD, said that the fundraiser “was definitely a success, and I hope we do more things similar to Kindness Week in the future.”
Overall, many felt that this joint effort brought joy and smiles to students and teachers both.
