Season's End: Girls Varsity Volleyball's Semifinals Game

by Talia Herbst, SSLI '25

On Wednesday night, Girls Varsity Volleyball went to SAR (Salanter Akiba Riverdale) Academy for their semifinals game. The girls won the first two sets; however, SAR then won the last three sets. Nonetheless, the girls put up a good fight and played hard.

Because they played all five sets, the game was about three hours long with no substitutions made. Junior Hannah Fineman stated, “Although we did not win, I think we won at heart.”

There were some setbacks with the referee that caused frustration. Fineman continued, “Despite all of this, the girls and I had a wonderful game; we all really left our hearts on the court.”

Captain and senior Lily Weissberg was feeling very “exhilarated” the entire game. She felt that the competition on both sides was equally matched. Weissberg explained, “Though it was stressful, and it was hard to fight for every point, it was so exciting and fun to be a part of that experience, and get to really show off every single skill that we've acquired this entire year.”

Even though the season is over, they put in a good effort, feel much improvement, and are excited for next season. (Girls Varsity Volleyball)

Since this was the last game of the season and the last volleyball game for the seniors, there were many emotions going through everyone's heads. Fineman shared, “I am very sad that our seniors will be leaving us for next year, but I’m sure the underclassmen will step up and fill the shoes of the leaving seniors.” Weissberg is sad that her high school volleyball career is over, but she is proud of how far the team has come and how much closer they have gotten. She stated, “We really work together more than the way a team does; we work as a family.”

Junior Liam Golan went to SAR to watch the game. He shared, “I wanted to support my friends and Schechter sports.” Golan continued, “I enjoyed watching the volleyball [game]. They really put up a fight.”

Weissberg shared, “I know I put all of my energy and all of my abilities into this game, and I truly saw every other player do the same.”

Fineman concluded, “I am just so proud of how much our team has grown this season, and I will treasure the family this team has formed.”
