Kesher Hosting a Chametz Drive

 by Talia Herbst, SSLI '25

This entire week, The Kesher Club is having a Chametz Drive for anyone who wishes to donate any unopened and unwanted chametz to get rid of since Passover is right around the corner. Chametz, or any food that is made with leaven, is not allowed to be eaten by Jews on Passover.

When the fundraiser is over, the food will be donated to the Saint Aidan Food Pantry. President of the Kesher Club and Paw Print Now Editor Sasha Chernoff shared, “Every time Kesher does a fundraiser, I feel like we are making a difference. Although it is only locally, we are helping those in need.”

This Chametz Drive has been done many times in the past. Ms. Dubow, Director of Jewish Education and Community Engagement, explained that this idea came about because “on Purim, we collected boxes of pasta instead of asking kids to bring in gragers so then we could donate afterwards.”

Some students from the Schechter community donated to the drive. Junior Addison Pravato donated her unwanted and unopened chametz. She shared, “It is the little things that go a long way for people, and this was easy to do, so I am glad I can help out.”

Spring and Passover time is when many people clean out their homes, fridges, pantries, closets, and more. Dubow added, “We publicized [the drive] so that everyone can bring their food.... Instead of having people throw out things that are good and unopened, we thought it would be more appropriate for them to give them a donation.”

Chernoff concluded, “The fundraiser ends on Friday, so please bring foods you want to get rid of before Passover and [help] make a difference.”
