Schechter Hosts Second Blood Drive of Year

by Penina Charry, SSLI '27

Today, Schechter hosted its biannual blood drive run by the New York Blood Center and Student Government. Many students, parents, and staff participated in the fight to save lives by donating their blood.

Senior and Student Body President Elinor Schlissel donated blood today for the fourth time. She felt that “it went well… The staff was also nice, which helped the experience a lot.” Schlissel shared that she decided to donate today because she knows “how important and dire the need for blood is right now.”

Senior and co-editor of Paw Print Now Yael Pedram has donated blood since her sophomore year, when she was first eligible. Pedram shared that she “decided to donate blood because [it] saves lives” and encourages others to do the same. She explained that even though “it's a little nerve-wracking, … once it's over, I feel great about what I've done and how I am contributing to my greater community.”

Student Government Advisor Mr. Connelly also donated blood today. He stated that he has “donated at every blood drive at Schechter” since he began working at the school. Connelly believed the blood drive went well, and he especially noted that his nurse “was so kind and energetic. She helped make it a pleasant experience.”

Connelly expressed his appreciation to the school community for donating. He added that donating blood is “a simple way to help out others in need” and that “having it at school couldn’t be more convenient to do a good deed.”

Schlissel concluded, “I like to do what I can to help my community and others who need it. I also know that one donation can save up to three lives, which is definitely worth it for me.”
