Schechter Seniors and Kindergarteners Make Salad Together!

by Talia Herbst, SSLI '25

This morning, seniors had the opportunity to join the kindergarten (Gan) class in making salad as part of the Tovim HaShnayim Program.

Tovim HaShnayim, which means “two is better than one,” launched at Schechter in September. It is a teacher innovation project in partnership with the Legacy Heritage Fund, where different grade levels join to learn and celebrate Jewish and Israeli culture.

Earlier this year, fourth and ninth grade students met to learn with each other as well as third and tenth grade students.

Ms. Fruithandler, the seniors' Bible teacher and one of the coordinators of Tovim HaShnayim along with Ms. Rebecca Friedman-Charry, explained, “Our goal is that by the end of the year, every grade in the school will have participated in at least one of these programs.”

Ms. Fruithandler said that she loved seeing the enjoyment that both the seniors and kindergarteners got out of this program. She shared, “It is exciting for our twelfth graders to be able to see the world through the eyes of our Gan students and to participate in their learning of the Hebrew language, which, as we learn in our Bible class, has always been an important part of our Jewish community.”

The Gan students taught the senior class a song that teaches the steps of making salad in Hebrew. After they sang the song to the seniors, the seniors joined and sang along with the kindergartners. Senior Jorgia Saracino explained that she “truly enjoyed the program with the Gan students.”

Saracino shared, “When I was a Gan student, I looked up to the older students. They were my role models, so teaching and spending time with the Gan students, seeing the smiles on their faces and excitement, was truly heartwarming.”

Senior and Student Body President Elinor Schlissel shared that she loved hanging out and participating in an activity with the Gan students. She said, “It made me feel closer to my community because I was able to interact with a different part of the school that I don’t really get the chance to do often.”

Saracino concluded, “I would love to do this again, and although we are graduating, I think this program is fun and educational for both the younger and older students.”
