AP Comparative Government Students Present on the UK

by Eric Wurtzel, SSLI '29

Today, in AP Comparative Government, students gave presentations on the United Kingdom, its relationships with other countries, its key components, and its recent events. Mr. Trupin, the department chair of Social Studies and teacher of the course, assigned students topics on the UK, and they were tasked to look at how different countries operate and play roles in the world.

Senior Layna Botwinick, who presented on the UK’s relationship with the US, stated that she “was surprised to hear that the UK’s government is committed to buying over $80 billion from US technology.” This shows how the UK is a very close ally with the United States, a fact that Botwinick says she learned a lot about during her research.

Another senior, Eden Greenfeld, who presented on UK-Israeli relations, said “I was able to learn a lot more about relationships between the UK and Israel that I didn’t know before.” Greenfeld continued, “It’s important to learn about other governments because you can compare it to our government.”

Mr. Trupin said, “When we learn about other countries' approaches to a problem, we can better assess the effectiveness of our own approach.” He continued saying how “They [the students] learn about how things work in another country and also get some experience making a presentation to an audience.”

Trupin concluded, “My hope would be that my students feel the class was worthwhile and that they enjoyed it.”
