Schechter Sports Update

by Sam Levenson, SSLI '27

Over the past two weeks, Schechter’s high school varsity and junior varsity sports teams have played some strong games and crossed their halfway points in their seasons. As we approach winter break, our athletes are evaluating their past games and preparing to finish strong.

JV Boys Basketball

Last week, Junior Varsity Boys Basketball played away games at Magen David and at HANC. The games were polar opposites, as the game against HANC was one of the worst while the team played one of their very best so far against Magen David.

This week, the team played against DRS. Harrison Kolin, a freshman, noted that “We knew it was a very tough game going into it, so we set achievable goals for ourselves.” He explained that they aimed to play good defense, make more shots, and put up a competitive game. Junior Brian Melzer said, “We played as well as I thought we could have,” and, “we really went out there to play our best and to have some fun.” While the outcome wasn’t perfect, Kolin reflected on the team’s improvements, stating that “we are improving our communication and consistency as a group when we play together.” Melzer said that “We can bring what we’ve learned in the first part of the season to the end by running the plays and implementing skills from our practices.”

Girls Volleyball

With a game last week against Flatbush, the Girls volleyball team showed their grit. While that game didn’t go so well, their game this past week against Central was a nailbitter, going into all 5 sets before a narrow loss.

Reflecting on the game against Central, with set scores of 21-14, 18-21, 21-6, 10-21, and 21-5, Brielle Melzer, a junior, explained that they had confidence going into the game. She said, “Before the game, I knew we would play well as a team, and it was going to be a great game.” Sarah Shlefstein, a senior, explained that since they had played this team before and lost, she and some others were a bit intimidated. However, she explained, “That did not stop our team from doing an excellent job.” Their confidence showed, and Melzer said, “The game went well, and we played one of our best games of the season.”

About any improvements that can be made for the next game, she explained that they could work on communication more, but that their “passing and out-of-system plays” had improved since the start of the season. Shlefstein noted that they played “with a lot of enthusiasm” and they kept up good energy throughout the game. Melzer also added how mentally challenging the game often is for many players, saying that, as the season progressed, “we’ve learned how to get out of our heads and play a fun and competitive game at the same time to play our best.” Shlefstein asserted, “If we keep improving the little things like serve-receive and staying aggressive, we can finish the season strong.”

Boys Hockey

Boys Hockey played a tough and physical game against Flatbush, who they play again next week. While they ultimately lost, they have a good chance for redemption in the upcoming match.

This weekend is very exciting for the Storm community; many alumni are returning to play this Sunday for the Alumni game, with current players, recent graduates, and veterans from decades ago.

Between the strong game against Magen David in Boys Basketball, the close match at Central in Girls Volleyball, and the upcoming Flatbush rematch, our sports teams are making great progress in their seasons and are looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring.
