Freshman Class Begins Israel Fundraising, Starts First Aid Kit Sales

by Doug Fisch, SSLI ‘15

This week, the freshmen began raising money for their grade trip to Israel in 2017. With the trip about three years away, the Class of 2017 wanted to get a head start by selling first aid kits.

Freshmen Isaac Bensignor and Alex Kristal are running the sales for the ninth grade. So far, the grade’s sales have been fairly strong. Bensignor said, “Sales have been good. There are people doing their job and becoming involved with the sales. If we put in a grade effort, our sales will be more effective.”

The goal is for each student to sell 24 kits. When asked about the first week of sales, freshman Matt Benak commented, “It took me 30 seconds to sell one. Since then, I have sold five kits, but there are people that have sold 20 already.”

Selling first aid kits will earn more profits for the grade than other fundraisers such as selling cookie dough. Jared Rogers, a freshman, said, “The fundraiser is very profitable. We get 50% of the profit, when, in most fundraisers, the grade only receives 20 or 30%.”

When Director of Student Life Mike Hirsch was asked about the switch in fundraisers, he stated, “Every year, people buy cookie dough, and this year the people wanted something healthier. The first aid kits are healthier and useful for people.”
