Gym Classes Begin Yoga Units

by Jeremy Holden, SSLI ‘14

This week, sophomore and freshmen gym classes started their units on yoga. Following the first class, there were mixed feelings amongst students about the program.

Maya Jeremias, a sophomore, feels that yoga is tough compared to past sports played in the class. She commented, "It's very hard to hold a position for thirty to forty seconds. Many students have trouble with it." She also thinks yoga is mentally challenging in terms of "discipline."

Freshman Matt Benak does not particularly enjoy yoga because of the way it is structured. He said, "There are so many kids in the class that it’s hard to do stuff like yoga. Another problem is that there are not enough mats for everyone." Benak does not feel that it is fair to grade everyone on a subject that is "harder for the less flexible."

Sophomore Asaf Hiltzik, however, enjoys yoga for its tranquil aspects. "Some days can be very stressful, and ending these days with yoga really calms me down." Hiltzik noted that he likes how Coach Kerry Dalton makes the classes more "diverse" with activities with yoga.
