AP Computer Science Wins Female Diversity Award

by Yonatan Pedram, SSLI '27

Schechter has won this year’s annual AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from the College Board. This prestigious award honors schools whose AP Computer Science classes are diverse in terms of gender, as they contain 50% or more females in their AP Computer Science class.

The class’s teacher, Mr. Garcia, explained the importance of expanding the field to women in schools: “I think female diversity or having a larger female population in STEM classes in particular is super important because women are generally underrepresented in the STEM fields.”

Schechter’s female students are also very proud of the achievement. Junior Jorgia Saracino, a student in AP Computer Science, shared her pride for Schechter: “I am extremely proud of the achievement! The presence of female students in computer science is very important, and I am very appreciative of what Schechter has done to make classes like AP Computer Science more accessible to women."

Junior and AP Computer Science student Addison Pravato shared a similar sentiment, explaining that this award is empowering for women and that she is extremely proud that the school “received the award” and that her and her peers feel “excitement for what is to come in the future of the curriculum.”

Congratulations to the Mr. Garcia and the AP Computer Science class at Schechter!
