Sports Recap: Softball and Volleyball

by Talia Herbst, SSLI '25

This past week was an exciting week for Schechter sports. Girls Varsity Softball and Boys Varsity Volleyball both had two games, and Boys Varsity Volleyball won both of them.

Girls Varsity Softball

On Monday, Girls Varsity Softball played against Portledge, and unfortunately they lost 14-8. Nonetheless, they tried their hardest. Co-captain and third baseman Hannah Fineman stated, “The games this week were good. Although we lost, we played good games as a team and made good plays.”

On Thursday, the team had a very close game against LuHi. In the seventh inning, the game was tied; however, LuHi ended up winning by one point with the final score being 14-13. The majority of the game was played in the rain, which led to some difficulties on the field. However, the girls pushed through, put up a fight, and still had fun.

Coach Dylan Stephenson said, “Hitting and fielding has definitely improved, but our biggest improvements have been base running and our pitch recognition.”

Junior and second baseman Yael Pedram shared, “We definitely fought our hardest, and this week, we fell short. However, I am optimistic about the future of our season.”

Fineman believes that “If we can amp up the power of our hits, we can be a lot more of an offensive team.”

Stephenson concluded, “We have a bunch of games left. With the end of the season on the horizon, I’m looking forward to us playing our best ball and seeing what we can accomplish as a team.”

Boys Varsity Volleyball

The boys played some amazing volleyball this week. On Monday, they beat Staten Island Academy (SIA), and on Tuesday, they beat LWA (Lawrence Woodmere Academy). Captain Liam Golan said, “We had a great week this week, with two very good wins.”

Both of the wins this week helped improve the teams record and standing in the PSAA (Private School Athletic Association) League. Coach Josh Jurysta noted, “This was a very big growing week for our team. I saw a lot of growth, and a lot of improvement as a team and more teamwork and cooperation, which was very nice to see.”

Golan added, “We have definitely been working for these wins, so to see our hard work translate to wins is what makes it worth it."

Sophomore Micah Bidner proudly shared, “We've been working very hard with Coach Josh and working on a lot of our different skills. Overall, we definitely showed lots of improvement.”

Jurysta concluded, “I'm really proud of the team for sticking with the ultimate goal of improving together and working towards playing together as we've stuck it out through some growing pains.”
