Girls Varsity Basketball Season Begins

 by Corey Flyer, SSLI '26

The winter sports season is in full swing! Girls Varsity Basketball has been practicing for a few weeks, and yesterday, they had their first game of the season against Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA). Unfortunately, the team suffered a decisive defeat.
The girls have been working hard and have high hopes for the new season. (T. Herbst)

Yael Pedram, a senior and the new captain of the team, shared that LWA is "one of the best teams in the league, so there was a lot of apprehension around this game." There are many new members of the Schechter team, and Pedram shared, "This year is a learning year. We have a lot of middle schoolers and many students on the team who have never played basketball together before.”

Senior Talia Herbst gave some insight into what is being worked on in practice: “We have been working on everything: layup lines, rebounds, offensive and defensive plays, getting open, and, most importantly, communication. There are a lot of new players, so the younger students are learning the game, and we are all learning how to play together as a team.”

Though the team did not emerge victorious yesterday, they continue to work hard in practice to prepare and improve upon their gameplay. Pedram shared the team's goal is "to grow their skills and get some wins this season."

There is still a whole season ahead for this young team. As Herbst looks toward the season ahead, she expressed, “I am looking forward to watching the team improve as a whole as well as making my last season of basketball at Schechter the best one yet.”

The next game will be tomorrow against Stony Brook.
