Paw Print Now, Paw Print Magazine Earn Awards from American Scholastic Press Association

by Talia Herbst, SSLI ‘25

Recently, both Paw Print Magazine (PPM) and Paw Print Now (PPN) each won an award from the American Scholastic Press Association. Paw Print Magazine came in first place, and Paw Print Now came in third place.

Years ago, when Paw Print Magazine was a newspaper, the publication would be entered into this contest to receive feedback. Assistant Principal and advisor of both PPN and PPM Mr. Thorgersen explained, “I felt that it was time again for us to show the world what Schechter has, and so I wanted to enter into the contest again and let everyone know that we've got some quality journalistic publications.”

Senior, Editor-in-Chief of PPM, and one of the editors of PPN Yael Pedram is especially proud of the magazine. She explained, “It's very easy to get caught in the moment, and when the magazine is in its final form, it's hard to appreciate it. It was refreshing to get an outside perspective on something we work so hard on.”

Additionally, senior Carly Smith, the World News editor for PPM, and one of the editors of PPN, shared that she feels that all of her hard work is paying off. Her favorite part of PPM and PPN is contributing to “something that the whole Schechter community is seeing.” PPN and the magazine are special assets to our school, and Smith “love[s] being involved in it.”

Congratulations Paw Print Now and Paw Print Magazine! (I. Lax)

Thorgersen is “thrilled” about the awards PPM and PPN received. However, he disagrees with some of the critiques from the judge, who is not Jewish. Thorgersen elaborated, “He loved learning about our community, but he felt that whenever we use a Jewish word or reference a Jewish holiday, we should explain what that is.... To publish to our community and re-explain these [terms] every single day would be redundant and tedious to our audience.”

Pedram loves collaborating with her friends to make a final product that the school community gets to see. She added, “I love hearing what everyone has to say about our work.”

Shir Levenson, a junior, writer for PPM, and staff writer for PPN, feels honored to have received this award. She explained, “We have a full team filled with staff writers and editors. It is really nice to have everyone come together and receive this recognition for all of our hard work that everyone has been putting in.”

Thorgersen concluded, “I hope that the community takes a moment to congratulate my writers and editors. I'm so proud of them, and I want them to know that the community is proud of them as well.”
