Schechter's Theatre Club has been working hard for their upcoming production of Chicago, which was originally directed by Bob Fosse. The cast has been focusing on choreography. (J. Weston)
Recently, the cast has been working on one of the show's main elements: the choreography. Weston explained, “I think we’re building a strong ensemble…. We are really focusing on the choreography because … Bob Fosse is … an icon as far as choreography.”
Some of the cast members have been in prior high school theater productions. One of those cast members, junior Mikey Benlevi, said that rehearsals are “going really good.” Benlevi continued, “We’re making great progress and … the singing is going really well, the dancing is going really well … [and] we’re really excited.”
Alongside the high school theater veterans, there are also many new students that joined the club this year. Freshman Gavi Nitka, who used to participate in the middle school’s drama club, said that he is “really glad and grateful to be a part of the show. We have lots of work to do, but I am not worried at all.”
Another freshman, Sabrina Monasebian, said, “I think the play is really fun, and I’m happy I joined it. I get to be in it with all of my friends … and I’m making some new friends while being in it.” Monasebian is excited because she thinks the experience is “gonna help me become a better actor, overall.”
The production will play on April 3 and April 6 at the Long Island Children's Museum. Look out for more details in the upcoming months.
