Editor’s Note: PPN continues a tradition of winding down our year of reporting by celebrating each editor’s favorite post. We invite you to follow the link to the celebrated article.
My favorite article from this past school year was “Honoring Omer Neutra: Schechter Holds Siyum Tanakh Ceremony” by Liba Fruithandler. Alongside her great reporting, Liba excelled in connecting the reader to Omer Neutra HY”D’s story and character.
After starting her article describing Omer’s story, Liba provided a concise description of the event commemorating Omer’s legacy. She named Omer’s favorite songs, which were sung by the school choir. She then told how Omer’s jersey number, 24, was retired and his banner was hung in the gym rafters.
She also recounted the Siyum Tanakh ceremony which was held in honor of Omer. The whole Schechter community contributed in reading and writing about parts of the Hebrew Bible, as a mitzvah or a commandment, attributed to Omer’s name, to fulfill the Jewish practice of doing mitzvot in the name of people who passed away.

Lastly, Liba mentioned the award, scholarship, and fund created to commemorate Omer and his legacy.
Liba did a wonderful job reporting on the ceremony. Liba is currently a PPN writer, and we hope she will continue writing great articles in the coming year.
