First Full Student Government Meeting of the School Year

by Liba Fruithandler, SSLI '28

Last Friday, the student government had a meeting with new grade representatives (reps). The newly elected grade reps are Gideon Levenson (9), Eric Wurtzel (9), Elan Golan (10), Jake Seigel (10), Brielle Meltzer (11), and Mia Bachrach (12).

The high school student government is made up of the executive board and grade reps who work together to plan events throughout the school year. The executive board was elected last spring in order to allow for new leaders to step into their roles and begin planning for the current school year. Executive board positions include the president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, spirit chair, and club manager.

Each grade also elects two representatives who serve as student government leaders. New representatives were elected earlier this September, and now that they have met for the first time with the rest of the student government, their terms have officially begun.

Student Body President Micah Bidner addressed the rest of the government leaders and explained expectations for the year, along with the roles of the reps. As leaders, the grade reps are expected to be role models for their grade and act respectfully and responsibly. Sophomore rep Elan Golan said, “The meeting helped me a lot, because they set a lot of ground rules and explained what we will need to do and to know to be a rep.”

Another responsibility of the reps is running The Wing, the student government-run store for snacks, drinks, and ice cream. Reps, in addition to executive board members, are responsible for running the store at least once a cycle, either during Aruchat Esser or lunch.

Additionally, Bidner said that the reps are expected to plan at least one grade event and one mitzvah project this year. Events in the past have included movie nights, a competitive color war, or the game Word Assassin, but can be anything the reps suggest, if approved.

Throughout the year, the reps plan activities that allow students in their grade to relax and have fun together. Senior Jordan Bitton said, “Our grade reps have made the year fun through grade gatherings, snacks, and sporadic activities.” The grade activities are a great way to bond as a group and hang out while also participating in unique events.

The meeting was also a chance to give the representatives new ideas for those activities. Golan said, “I plan on upping the amount of grade activities and doing things that can bring us closer together, while still making it fun.”
