Varsity Cross Country Competes in Season's First Meet

by Jordan Bitton, SSLI '26

Schechter’s Varsity Cross Country team has been practicing since high school retreat in preparation for their first meet, which took place yesterday at The Stony Brook School. Overall, the team performed well and was high-spirited as they cheered on their teammates.

For a few eighth graders and new students, this was their first varsity meet. Afterwards, Cross Country Coach Mr. Connelly reflected, “Penina made for a great assistant coach for the day, and I appreciated her showing up even though she didn’t run. I am very proud of everyone, but especially of Eliyahu [Tomsky], Joshua [Fine], and Zoey [Diamond] for competing in their first cross-country meet with our team. They make great additions to our running kehilah [community]!”

At all meets, the students run two-and-a-half miles, or a 4k. Coach Connelly and the captains have been training the runners to run anywhere from two to three miles each practice to sufficiently prepare them for this distance. Senior and Co-Captain Micah Bidner expressed, “It was a really great meet. I've seen so much improvement in the team since we started practicing, and I'm so proud of everyone who ran.”

The runners also supported one another and pushed each other to go faster. Bidner continued, “One of the things that stood out the most to me was that every time I wanted to stop, I would slow down and then about 100 feet behind me, Eitan Guy would start yelling at me to go faster, which was really incredible. I'm so proud of everyone, and I can't wait for the next meet.”

In the next few weeks, Cross-Country will test its limits with weekly meets. Their next one is on Thursday, October 9, at LuHi. Go Lions!
