Schechter Sports Update

by Liba Fruithandler, SSLI '28

Yesterday, the Schechter tennis and soccer teams had matches and the cross country team had a meet. All three teams competed at LuHi.

The tennis team lost their matches. The team’s co-coach, Ms. Levine, said, “They played their all.” Despite the loss, Levine said that the team has improved. “There has one hundred percent been an improvement with the way the girls play.” She added that aside from improving their skills, they have also “grown as a team” by increasing their teamwork and cooperation.

The tennis players also feel that they have improved over the season. Sophomore Lila Harris remarked, "There's been some major improvement over the course of the season.” The team is also already excited about how they are going to prepare for next season. “We’re really excited [for the next season]… Everybody had a lot of fun.” Harris feels like the team “won in the sort of spirit that everybody was there and … having fun, and we were all supporting our teammates.”

The cross country meet took place at the same time as the tennis matches. The cross country team ran four kilometers (about 2.5 miles). To do so, they ran four laps around the school’s track. The racers were timed and ranked based on who finished the course the fastest. According to Josh Jurysta, the Director of Athletics, like the tennis team, the cross country team has had a lot of improvement over the season. Jurysta said, “Everyone seemed pretty pleased … with what [time] they ran.” He added that all the runners worked hard and morale was up before the meet.

The soccer team lost their match, with a final score of 8-2. Sophomore Elan Golan said, “Despite the loss, we put in a lot of effort and had a lot of fun.” He concluded, “I think we improved a lot and have been playing better as a team. We will keep practicing and will hopefully win our next game.”
