Schechter Sports Update

by Elan Golan, SSLI '28

This past week, Schechter sports teams have been practicing and have had games, all against other Jewish schools in the Yeshiva League.

Girls Volleyball

Varsity Girls Volleyball has been practicing consistently for weeks. They had no matches this past week. Junior Madison Hoffman stated, “The team has improved a lot in our communication and passing.” She also added “We have so much fun during our practices and games while still staying serious when we're playing.” Abby Marcus, a freshman, said, “The girls volleyball team has improved since the start of practicing 'til the present day.” She is hoping for “the team to get more wins.” Sophomore Sabrina Monasebian stated, "We've definitely improved on our communication and positive energy on the court during both games and practice.” She also mentioned, "I'd like to see us win as many games as possible throughout the next couple of months”

Boys JV Basketball

Boys Junior Varsity lost two games this week against Westchester Hebrew Academy on Monday and YDE on Tuesday. The boys have been practicing since October and had a total of four games. They have yet to win their first game. Basketball Coach Dylan Stephenson said, “Since the beginning of the season, the team has put a lot of work in on running our plays effectively and translating this to games.” He also stated, “I want to see our team improve on our passing ability and defense as we take on this next stretch of the season.”

Dylan hopes that the team gets the plays down, which would lead to success. Freshman Harrison Kolin stated, “I think we've improved well as a team.” He also mentioned "We've worked out passing, shooting, communication, and especially our sets and plays.”

Boys Varsity Hockey

Boys Varsity Hockey also played and lost two games this past week against North Shore on Monday and HAFTR on Wednesday. The Storm has been practicing and working on new strategies. Junior Sam Levenson stated, “The team has gotten a lot better since the beginning of the season. We've been working on things like being in the right position during the right play.” Sam also mentioned, "I'd like to see us work on our communication.” Freshman Ilan Honig said, “I think we're showing improvement; we look more like a team than we did a couple of weeks ago. Sophomore Josh Fine said, "I think each game was getting a little better and becoming more of a team.” He also mentioned that “bus rides are a true bonding experience; everyone is being very supportive to each other.”

Good luck to all Schechter teams in their upcoming games. Go Lions!
