Student Reflection on Burial of Omer Neutra HY"D

by Gabriel Khaimov, SSLI '29

Editors' Note: For today's post, freshman Gabe Khaimov shared his personal reflection on learning about Omer and what Omer's story means to him.

This morning, Captain Omer Neutra HY"D, a Schechter alumnus and IDF soldier who was murdered on October 7, was buried in Israel. In Schechter, Omer was a person who meant a lot to me and many others, especially in our school. He was brave and cared for many people. Hearing about his death was very sad and difficult for the whole school, but we were all grateful and relieved to see his return to Israel for a respectful burial.

To me, Omer’s death shows how important life is and how we should all live it to the
fullest, and how we have to stay united and care for each other as a nation. We never know when we will be saying our last goodbyes. Personally, Omer symbolizes bravery, strength, and Zionism. I am very relieved that he has finally returned to Israel for a proper burial.

I feel sad and happy when I think about Omer. I will always remember him not only for his heroism, but also for his great personality and his leadership, which we frequently talk about in school. I am sure that the Schechter community will not forget Omer, and I am very grateful for that. Even though he's gone, he will forever stay in our hearts.

Rest in peace Omer, we will never forget you.
