Winter sports continue to roll as Girls Varsity Volleyball and Boys Varsity Hockey played games this week. The girls played their first game in Brooklyn on Monday night against Magen David, where the team pulled off its first win to open the season 3–2. The hockey team, the Storm, had its home opener Monday night against JEC, where they fell short 5–2 but showed improvement since the first game.
Leading up to the volleyball game, co-captain Sarah Shlefstein anticipated “working together as a team” to earn points and win the game. The team worked well together, communicating and helping each other to secure the victory. Afterwards, junior Madison Hoffman thought that the team had a “great first game,” and she was excited to “keep the energy up” as the season progresses. Hoffman is also eager to improve “our communication and to keep on building teamwork.”
Girls Varsity Volleyball head coach Josh Jurysta said the game was a “really exciting match.” Jurysta added, “I was really happy with how they played.” The team did a great job supporting each other, Jurysta said, and he is ready for the rest of the season.

Varsity Hockey played its first home game of the season Monday night. The team was excited, according to freshman Zach Bazini, who, in his first home game, was feeling pumped because “all of our parents and everybody from the school was gonna be watching.” Bazini shared that this game felt even more special since it was his birthday, and he wanted a win even more.
Although the team wasn’t able to pull out the win for Bazini's birthday, there’s a lot to look forward to for the rest of the season. Freshman Jonah Herbst, who made his first start as goalie, has high hopes. Herbst stated that the team played “great in front of [him]” but understood that the game is “fast-paced,” meaning he didn’t have much time between shots and had to stay mentally ready for the next one.

Sophomore Jake Siegel felt that the team “showed a lot of improvement from our first game.” Siegel stated that the team played “more aggressively” and with “more pride,” which he thought the team needed in order to win games.
With the final score being 5–2, the Storm did manage to score two goals. Freshman Eric Wurtzel, who scored both goals, entered the game with the mindset that “if we weren’t gonna go in confident, we weren't gonna win.” Goalie Jonah Herbst said that playing at home means you can feel “more energy from parents, fans, and anyone who was here.” Herbst is looking forward to the team’s upcoming game next week.
Both teams' next games are on Monday, November 10, 2025, at home, back-to-back starting at 6:30. The school is planning a "Blue Out," where everyone wears blue to the game.
