Schechter Prepares for Annual SNL

by Liba Fruithandler, SSLI '28

Schechter’s SNL club has been hard at work preparing for their performance, which is coming up next week. Based on the well-known American late-night sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live, Schechter’s own Schechter Night Live has become a yearly tradition.

In this bespoke version of the show, written entirely by high school students, club members work together to write skits related to Schechter, and, this year, two of them are videos that were filmed before the show.

In the weeks leading up to the performance, the club’s actors and writers meet during lunch to brainstorm ideas. This year, four club presidents work together to coordinate the scenes, scripts, videos, props, and actors: Seniors Shay Ginzburg and Mikey Benlevi, and juniors Ephraim Berman and Sara Rosenthal. Writer Jake Siegel said that “everyone in the club gives feedback,” which allows everyone to have a say in the skits before making the finishing touches.

The club's presidents run this year’s Schechter Night Live. (S. Levenson).

The digital skits are a particular favorite of President Ephraim Berman. Berman stated, “You get to go, and you get to film stuff.” While most of the show is composed of live skits, the digital skits give the club a chance to use all of their creativity, because they are not confined to the resources and stage in the gym.

The production of SNL requires a full team of writers, actors, and stagehands. Club members have been working together to finalize their scripts, get their official stamp of approval, and find student- and sometimes teacher-actors. During the show, stage crew members help move props on and off the stage, while the club presidents direct the show and act in it alongside the cast.

In preparation for the show, Siegel read a lot of the skits and believes that “they are all super funny,” and he “can’t wait to see how much people laugh.”

Writers and cast members are looking forward to SNL, which will take place in the gym on Thursday, December 18, as one of the special programs during Hanukkah.

Good luck to the directors and break a leg to the cast!
