Earlier today, Paw Print Magazine held a galley in which the editorial and layout staff came together to finalize the winter edition of the magazine.
Because there are three editions of Paw Print each year (fall, winter, and spring), there are three corresponding galley sessions. Senior Micah Bidner, who is the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, explained that at each galley, the entire Paw Print staff "look[s] at a printed version of the magazine so that we can go over the last and final edits that we have to make before we can send it off to print." Mr. Shawn Thorgersen, the faculty advisor for the magazine, added that the galley serves as a designated time to make "last-minute changes."
Madison Hoffman, a junior on the layout staff for Paw Print, outlined what happens in a galley. She shared that "the copy editors, content editors, editor-in-chief, and junior editor-in-chief line-edited the articles and made sure that everything would be perfect." After edits are made on paper and three editors have signed off on each paper, Hoffman and the rest of the layout staff fix the articles accordingly on the website they use to design the magazine.

The magazine is entirely student-operated. Bidner reflected that his favorite part of being a part of Paw Print Magazine is "watching how the words on a page of a Word document get turned into this incredible ... magazine that people are excited to look at." Hoffman remarked that her favorite thing to do for the magazine is "to look through the articles and think of fun graphics or pull quotes that [she] can incorporate into the articles."
This galley was especially exciting, as it was the seniors' last galley of their high school careers. Bidner said that "it is really bittersweet that this is my final edition, but I have just seen our incredible editors grow and improve over the course of the editions that I've been a part of."
Thorgersen noted that he is "incredibly impressed" with the work that the students do for the magazine. He appreciates that Bidner "put a permanent artistic stamp on his legacy as an editor-in-chief," and that senior Emma Roth has created "original covers" for each edition during her time on the layout staff.
Keep an eye out for the upcoming winter edition of Paw Print Magazine!
