Sports Update: Post Winter Break Sports

by Jonah Herbst, SSLI '29

Schechter sports have been in full swing this week since we returned to school after winter break.

Girls Varsity Volleyball

Girls Varsity Volleyball had three games this week. The girls fell just short to HANC losing 3-2 on Monday and then 3-1 to HANC again on Tuesday. They closed out the week with a loss of 3 sets to 2 against North Shore. Although Assistant Principal Shawn Thorgersen described this loss as a “heartbreaker,” he gave a shout-out to junior Madison Hoffman “for some amazing serves.”

Hoffman said that it was difficult to play the same team two days in a row, “but it was a challenge that we were more than ready to face.” Senior and Co-Captain Eden Greenfeld said, “Playing the same team two days in a row gave our team a little bit of an advantage.” Both Hoffman and Greenfeld agreed that it was helpful to already know how their opponents play so that they can make the correct adjustments. Hoffman added that having winter break in the middle of the season was difficult because “we weren’t able to practice for a long period of time, but the whole team played very well in both games.”

They are 2-7 with one more game remaining in the season.

Boys JV Basketball

Boys JV Basketball finished up their season yesterday with a 73-37 loss against Westchester.

Coach Dylan Stephenson said, “The team has grown in a lot of ways since the beginning of the season. Starting with, we have done a much better job at running our plays, our shooting has really gotten better, and we’ve done better at finishing possessions defensively.” Sophomore Elan Golan said he felt good and was proud of his performance this season. Golan wished that “the team passed more and had better communication during games.”

For next season, Stephenson wants the team to change their approach going into games. Golan concluded, “I am hoping to develop my skills on the court, and I look forward to next season.”

Boys Varsity Hockey

The Storm worked hard at practice this week as they enter the final stretch of the hockey season. Junior Sam Levenson said he would like “to see the team push as much effort as we can throughout the last few games. We have an opportunity to be very competitive, and we need to show all the hustle and passion that we have as we finish up the season.” Coach Noah Roth said he is looking forward to the team having fun and showing growth through these last few games. Levenson is proud of the way the team has improved and hopes to see that continue for the rest of the season. The Storm has two games against Magen David next week and will close out the season on January 29 against HANC.
