Sports Recap: Final Games and Senior Night!

by Shir Levenson, SSLI '26

This was a busy week for SSLI sports with many games for Varsity Hockey, Boys Junior Varsity Basketball, and Girls Varsity Basketball.

Varsity Hockey

On Monday night, the Schechter Storm played an intense game against YDE and won. The score was 3-2, with Noah Schor scoring two goals and Ariel Duftler scoring one. Schor's final goal, in the last minute of the game, carried the team to victory.

Ariel Duftler, a senior, shared his experience at the last game: “Playing that last game against a team that by record, and player depth, were much better than us, it felt good to go into that game completely loose and completely free. We went into that game dancing in the locker room.”

Duftler continued that, after YDE had scored two goals, “We weren’t that discouraged, and then we started scoring. Noah [Schor] buried the first on an insane goal - probably the greatest goal I’ve ever seen. He bat the ball up in the air three times and then he shot it over the goalie’s head.”

Josh Jurysta, the athletics director, reported that “they upset a team bound for the playoffs, so that was pretty cool. I’m really happy that our seniors got to end their high school career with a win.”

Boys Junior Varsity Basketball

On Tuesday, Boys Varsity Basketball played and lost against Martin Luther. It was an intense game, and the boys played hard. On Wednesday, the boys played Portledge and lost with the final score 65-25. Reflecting on the game, John Aronnie, a junior, felt that the team “worked really hard, but there's room for improvement.”

Girls Varsity Basketball

Girls Varsity Basketball played and lost against Portledge on Monday and Martin Luther on Tuesday. Even though they lost both games, the teamwork and effort were strong. Jurysta shared that “the girls have been working on passing and just general offense.”

Today, the team played their final game of the season against Kew Forest. The team won the game and celebrated senior night with posters and flowers for the senior girls.

Talia Herbst, a senior and staff writer for PPN, is proud of the team, saying, “The game was good. We won 31-14. The team played well, we were all playing to have fun, especially the four of us seniors since this was our last game. Glad to end my high school basketball career with a hard earned win.”
