Motivational Monday: Spotlight on Emma Bakes Treats and Yael’s Sign Off

by Talia Herbst '25

Schechter High School student Emma Roth has talent when it comes to baked goods. Roth not only bakes for her friends and family at home but also for Schechter students to enjoy. She loves bringing in her sweet treats to share with the community as well as selling them for good causes.

Emma’s baking journey began back in 2016 when she first started baking for fun. Roth said, “I did not get serious about baking until 2019 when I made my first business named Emma’s LI Cupcakery. Slowly, and with practice, I got more confident in the kitchen and eventually launched Emma Bakes Treats, which is my current business.”

When she was younger, Roth often spent time watching her mother in the kitchen, which ultimately sparked her passion for baking. In addition to finding inspiration from the goodies her mom made, Roth also began watching Jyoti Nanra on Instagram and YouTube. She shared, “[Jyoti Nanra] used a lot of color and really cool techniques, so I started to make cupcakes inspired by her ideas for family members’ birthday parties.”

Roth bakes an array of desserts including cupcakes, cookies, cakes, macarons, muffins, and pies. She is currently working on Pâte à Choux, which is a dough used to make éclairs, profiteroles, and croquembouche (a tower of cream puffs glued together with spun sugar).

Oftentimes, Roth can be seen around school handing out her treats for friends and teachers to try. Additionally, Roth has helped by supplying food to school fundraisers and by baking desserts for the Winter Formal. Junior Sarah Shelfstein said Roth’s treats “are really good.”

Not only does Roth bake sweet desserts, but she cooks as well. Roth enjoys cooking savory meals and side dishes because she likes having the ability to be creative and experiment with different recipes.

Baking makes Roth feel relaxed. She expressed that when she pauses her busy school schedule to bake or cook, she puts on music and “lets the rest of the world go blank.” Roth shared her hopes for the future: “I hope to keep growing my business and eventually turn it into something more!”

For those who wish to purchase some of Roth’s sweet treats, she takes orders by text or email from anyone who lives locally. Whenever she holds a sale, Roth ensures that she donates a portion of the money to one of her “core charities.”

A Graduating Editor’s Note:

Dear PPN Readers,

As I look back on my high school experience, all I can think about are the little things I have forgotten: the fun events, the meaningful ceremonies, the entertaining performances, and everything else Schechter has to offer; that is why PPN is special. For four years, I have been a part of what can be called a Schechter scrapbook, bringing together different classes, different grades, and different experiences. I am so grateful to have been part of such an impactful news blog. As an editor, one of my favorite aspects of this site is making others’ voices heard. As a reader, I love hearing everyone’s opinions. The nuances of an article is what makes it a good one; hearing all sides of the story creates a dynamic article. As I edit my last article today after two years of editing, I reflect on all the articles I have worked on. I wish I could tell ninth grade me to take it all in, because four years later, she will begin to experience all the “lasts.”

Thank you to Risa, Carly, Ellie, and Sasha for making this experience amazing. Coordinating articles every Sunday for two years is no easy feat, but I am grateful that, as a team, we have been able to successfully publish an article every day for two years. Mr. Thorgersen, thank you for always being there to help. Whether I have a question or you have a critique, I have learned so much through this experience over the past years. Shir, Corey, Yoni, Penina, and Sara, I am so excited to see where you take this newsletter. Each set of editors has new perspectives and new skills to add to the ever-developing newsletter, and I cannot wait to see you five succeed. Last, but definitely not least, thank you to all the readers. Without you all, there would be no PPN; every single one of you is truly appreciated.
