Schechter Hosts "Blue Out"

by Zachary Bazini, SSLI '29

Last week, Schechter students realized there would be two Schechter sports games happening just two hours apart from each other: a girls' volleyball game and a boys' hockey game.

This past Monday, the Storm played a hockey game against YDE right after the Lions played their volleyball game against the Yeshiva of Central Queens (YCQ). Posters were created announcing this double header, calling it a "Blue Out." Students came together by wearing blue to school and staying after to show their support for the teams.

The Blue Out was received well amongst the student body. Anna Siegel, a freshman, reflected that she thought it "was a great way to start off the winter season with tons of Schechter spirit." Likewise, junior Madison Hoffman thought that "it was so much fun, and it was so great seeing so many Schechter students there." The Blue Out brought students together to watch great efforts from both teams. Jonah Herbst, a freshman, noted that the event united everyone.

Both the Lions and the Storm played their best, but unfortunately neither team was able to take home the win. In the volleyball game, YCQ defeated the Lions 3-0. The hockey game ended with a final score of 15-0, with YDE taking the win.

Although neither Schechter team won, both games were entertaining for students to sit down and watch. Gabriel Khaimov, a freshman, said, “I was excited to watch the games with my friends.” Hoffman, who commentated the Storm game with fellow junior Sara Rosenthal, recalled that the game was "very entertaining to watch."

The athletes appreciated everyone's attendance. Siegel, a member of Girls' Volleyball, shared that the Blue Out was her first home game. She "loved that everyone was cheering and clapping and supporting one another through our ups and downs."

Both teams played their best, and we hope that, in the next few games, Schechter will come out victorious. Students cannot wait for another opportunity to be united like they were at the Blue Out.

Go Lions and go Storm!
